Initial investigations by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau has confirmed that a subsidence had occurred in the Achchuveli area in Jaffna.
Director General of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, Bernard Prem said that the site was inspected by him along with officers of the Jaffna office.
He stated that the subsidence had occurred with a diameter of 50m in a circular area and went on to note that the subsidence had occurred along with a huge noise.
However, he added that the Anuradhapura Earthquake Observation Centre is observing the situation. Meanwhile, the former Vice Chancellor of the Sri Jayawardene University, Professor Senevi Epitawatte noted that a subsidence as such occurs due to the presence of limestone material.
