President Maithripala Sirisena made a statement about the opportunistic nature of politics on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016

President Sirisena expressed these views while attending a special event organised to present credentials to the new Chief Sangha Nayaka of the Colombo District of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect, Ven. Nikula Dharma Keerthi Sri Seelarathana Pagnyasara Thera.

Speaking during the event, the president said that many falsehoods are being spread across society on the statements made by him and the prime minister in parliament on changes that are necessary for the constitution. He said political reforms that have to be made with adjustments that are suitable for the current era.

The president went onto say that these falsehoods are intended to create tensions in the country, destabilise the government politically, sabotage the new government’s programme and to denigrate the good faith that the people have placed in ruling party politicians.

President Sirisena noted that the only motive behind these statements is to be the next to claim power. He added that he believes that these devadattas are standing in the way of their efforts to create an inclusive environment in order to prevent another war.

He was speaking at an event held at the Sri Bodhiraja Viharaya in Colombo Fort.
