Investigations have been launched by the Department of Archaeology into an incident where artefacts belonging to a section of the Deegawapiya Heritage Zone were allegedly bulldozed.
The director general of the Archaeology Department noted that some of the ancient artefacts such as undated ancient pillars are located in the area.
After a complaint was lodged with the police by the Ampara Archaeology Department in this regard, police said a statement has been recorded from the chief incumbent of the temple where the pillars were located. The chief incumbent had noted that land was bulldozed to make way for a new building.
