The revived Presidential Export Awards Ceremony graced by President Maithripala Sirisena took place today at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre in Colombo.

The Presidential Export Awards recognises the contributions made by the export community for the national development.

The event was organised by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board. The most significant value of the Presidential Export Award is that it is presented to the winners by the President as a symbol of its prestige and national recognition.

The president stated:

Every country experiences the need to increase its foreign capital and in order to achieve this, it is of paramount importance that we strengthen the export markets on a national level. But it is disappointing to note that the Sri Lanka Export Development Board was simply limited to its mere name and that is what was witnessed in the past

He added:

There are many local businessmen and we need to strengthen them. So, we need to provide them with knowledge and technical skills, and  also study the process. That is how we can achieve this.

State Minister of International Trade, Sujeewa Senasinghe said:

You know, exports in this country have declined – if you take statistics – ten years ago, if you compare to the world GDP, our exports were about 0.09 but for the past 10 years it has declined to 0.05. If you take the national GDP for the past 10 years , it was 34 percent of the GDP and as present it is 14 percent. Twenty percent – we have come down .

He further stated:

The world has moved forward but we have gone back. In 2014 all the countries have overtaken us, we are the lowest coming from 14.5 percent, we have come down to 10.2 percent. Our target is very ambitious.

He also noted:

As I said, the platform that we have built our foreign relations is better, You know, our foreign relations suffered for the past six to seven years.
