Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe held a meeting with the unemployed graduates at the parliamentary complex on Saturday.
The discussions were centred around providing employment to the unemployed graduates, as well as the issues face by the employed.
Trade union representatives spoke to the media following their discussion with the Prime Minister.
Sri Lanka Freedom Graduates’ Association, Media Secretary Piyal Darshana Guruge stated that the prime minister promised to take expeditious measures and have another round of discussions to plan a programme to provide employment for graduates. Furthermore graduates who are currently employed have raised their concerns on certain issues that have arisen.
He further stated:
The preliminary measures to solve these issues were taken today and is a special occasion. Since all graduates’ associations came under one roof and we were able to agree on some terms to solve certain common issues that are faced by all.
State Minister of National Policy and Economic Affairs, Niroshan Perera stated:
We have identified many issues that have arisen, such as finding employment for graduates in the government and private sector and also providing them with a good salary. A special committee with representatives from both organisations have been formed and within two weeks. We hope to meet and identify necessary measures that could be taken to solve these issues, and to solve them by next year.
