Speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that measures will be taken to address the crumbling tea industry.

Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that the situation at present is different in comparison to 2008.

At present after the agreement between the US and Iran, talks are held between both these countries to export tea.

He went on to note:

They are sending ministers to Turkey to expand their tea trade there. The Finance Ministry has provided a sum of one billion rupees to the Tea Board to revitalise the industry.

UPFA Parliamentarian, Dullas Alahapperuma stated:

There were two wars in 2008.  One was inside the country, it was a very critical moment for the country and then there was a war outside the country, in Iraq.

Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that they did not grow tea in the North even though the war was there. Therefore, the war had no impact to this industry.

He added that he has no intention of arguing about why the country’s two main trades were not taken to Europe and that he cannot even ask about it because the then Ambassador is no more. The PM said:

He has gone missing and so has this trade.
