Twenty eight (28) meet records were established at the All Island School Games which concluded on Monday, October 12.
Maristella College Negombo won the All Island Boys Championship for the sixth time while Walala A. Ratnayake Central College emerged the girls champions for the tenth time.
The All Island School Games which was held over a period of five days at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Diyagama came to a close on Monday under the auspices of President Maithripala Sirisena.
Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was also in attendance. The finals of the 4×400 meters relays were held prior to the closing ceremony.
The vibrant closing ceremony consisted of drills performed by school children and a special performance by the students of the Chithra Lane School for Special Children.
President Sirisena, speaking at the event, stated that compared to the previous years, a large sum of funds have been allocated on behalf of the Ministry of Education in the year 2016 to provide holistic education.
He went on to note that initial preparations have been made to formulate a programme to provide guidance outside the school curriculum.
He added that at present children are exposed to crimes and unbelievable tragedies that befall on children. He said that due tot his situation, it is essential to take measures to eradicate such tragedies from society.
The highlight of the 2015 All Island School Games was three new meet records set by two brothers Pasindu Bawantha and Aruna Darshana of Weerakeppitipola National School in Matale.
