Ampara HC overturns compulsory sentence imposed on Damana teen

Ampara High Court Judge Sumudu Premachandra. on Tuesday, overturned a compulsory 250-day imprisonment sentence imposed on a 17-year-old school student by the Ampara Additional Magistrate.

The student had been given the prison sentence for the possession of 510 grammes of Heroin.

However, when an appeal filed by the attorney of the student was taken up for consideration on Monday, the High Court Judge overturned the prison sentence.

Instead of the 250-day prison sentence, the student will now have to go through two years in probationary care, and undergo rehabilitation.

The High Court Judge also ordered that the Rs.6000  fine imposed upon the student be converted into a state cost.

The 17-year-old student was arrested in the Damana area, by the Ampara police, for the possession of 510 grammes of Heroin, on  March 3, 2015.
