The National Child Protection Authority has appointed a committee to look  into the failure to take legal action against individuals found guilty of abusing those under 16 years of age.

Chairperson of the Authority, Natasha Balendran stated that minor punitive measures are being imposed for incidents of abuse as per the Penal Code.

However, she added that it appears that the punitive measures taken against abuse of minors is insufficient. Thereby, the newly-established Commission will look into the reasons for situation.

She added that recommendations on the punitive measures that should be taken against the perpetrators of abuse will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department through the commission in the future.
