A group of SLFP MPs who were victorious at the general elections met with President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday August 23.The meeting got underway at the President’s official residence in Colombo.
UPFA MP-Elect Namal Rajapaksa, speaking to media said that they were given the freedom to decide whether to join the national government and those who wish to do so can do that, adding that others can function in the opposition.
He also said that the people of Hambantota district gave him 127,000 preferential votes, that was to form a SLFP government or a UPFA government, therefore he will be in the opposition.
UPFA National List Nominee Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said that they need to function in a manner that does not harm the unity of the party and work towards making the party victorious at up coming local elections.
Making his decision clear, he said that he will act according to the decision of the central working committee of the party and the decisions of President Maithripala Sirisena as the party chairman.
Meanwhile, UPFA MP-Elect Dullas Alahapperuma noted that people voted for them to form an alternative to Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government therefore as a public representative who stood up for this, he is willing to function in the opposition with pleasure.
UPFA MP-Elect Mahinda Amaraweera also expressing his views said that those who did not hold ministerial posts and those who criticised them are the ones who are waiting at Ranil Wickremesinghe’s doorstep, asking for ministerial posts.
He added that it is rather better to come near President Maithripala Sirisena without going there.
