General Election 2015: Several former MPs will not return to parliament

With the announcement of the final results of the 2015 General Elections, the dreams of many former parliamentarians of making a come-back to Parliament were shattered.

Five hundred and fifty nine (559) Female candidates contested the polls, of which only nine have been elected to the house of legislature, thus far.

Former Minister Piyasena Gamage and Gunaratne Weerakoon from the Galle District were denied the opportunity to enter parliament. Ajith Kumara who represented the Frontline Socialist Party did not secure victory at the polls.

S.B. Dissanayake, considered to be one of the most powerful political characters, did not secure a sufficient number of preferential votes to enter parliament from the Kandy district.

R.M. Abdul Cader and Eric Weerawardena are two more powerful MPs who lost their seats.

Suresh Premachandran, Sylvester Alanteen and Murugesu Chandra Kumar have been denied re-entry to parliament. V.K. Indika and Nirupama Rajapaksa have made it in to the list of losers from the Hambantota District.

UPFA Candidates from the Matara District Vijaya Dahanayake and Hemal Gunasekera and the JVPs Sunil Handunnetti have been denied another term in Parliament.

Former Sri Lanka Muslim Congress MP M.S. Thowfeek suffered defeat at the polls and Former UPFA minister from the Matale District Nandimithra Ekanayake and Rohana Dissanayake too saw their dreams of re-entering parliament fade away.

Two of the most prominent political figures in Moneragala, Jagath Pushpakumara and Vijith Vijayamuni Soysa were unable to secure victory at the polls this time around.

Over in the Badulla district , the UPFAs Udith Lokubandara , Rohana Pushpakumara and Former Minister Lakshman Seneviratne were among those defeated at the 2015 polls.

Former UPFA Deputy Minister, from the Kegalle District Lalith Dissanayake and Former MP Y.G.Padmasiri also lost their parliamentary seats.

P. Ariyanethran and Pon Selvarasa from the ITAK and M.L.A.M. Hisbullah from the UPFA, were denied victory in the Batticaloa district.
