Deputy Minister of Mass Media, Shantha Bandara has resigned from his portfolio.
Speaking to News 1st on July 30, the former deputy minister confirmed his resignation. Shantha Bandara stated that the decision to appoint the minister from the SLFP was taken with the aim of forming a national government. Therefore they had decided that the central committee should convene and permission be obtained to step down.
He went on to note that he was compelled to take this decision since the convening of the central committee meeting was postponed, with the elections drawing closer.
He added that it is not appropriate to take such a decision with the elections just at hand, which has resulted in a widespread of false speculations in the Kurunegala district.
He added that he stepped down from his post in response to false rumours which have being propagated by SLFP and UNP members.
