The Prime Minister’s Office announced that the Memorandum of Understanding on the creation of the United National Front to represent Good Governance, will be signed on Sunday, July 12.
A number of factions held discussions on Saturday to contest under the UNF as a Common Alliance at the August 17 parliamentary polls.
Minister Rajitha Senaratne announced that political parties and organisations that worked towards the victory of Maithripala Sirisena during the presidential election, have agreed to contest the general election as a common alliance.
Minister of Health and Indigenous Medicine, Dr. Rajitha Senaratne stated that the UPFA has provided nominations to rogues, drug peddlers and ethanol dealers, which is disgusting.
He went on to note that they will join hands with the forces that were there back then. The National Movement for a Just Society under Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero, The Pivithuru Hetak organisation of Venerable Rathana Thero , the JHU of Minister Champika Ranawaka, the LSSP, the Communist Party and 49 other civil organisations that joined with them will be contesting under the United National Front ticket with the UNP symbol of the elephant.
Discussion at various levels took place at a number of locations in order to join the common alliance. A number of persons who held discussions at the residence of Minister Rajitha Senratne left for Temple Trees for further discussions.
Meanwhile, another discussion had taken place at the residence of Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka with Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero. When News 1st visited Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thero and inquired on the forming a new alliance, he said that he cannot mention anything at that time.
Meanwhile, Hirunika Premechandra signed the nomination papers to contest under the United National Front to represent good governance, at the party headquarters Sirikotha on Saturday. She said that she will contest from the Colombo District. Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Research, Sudarshani Fernandopulle said that she must clearly state that she will be contesting under the SLFP led United People’s Freedom Alliance ticket.
She added that she will never leave this party as she has not signed the nomination papers as yet. Two or three parties from the Alliance are hoping to contest from the Katana Electorate.
Further, it will be unfair if more that two candidates are put forward, place. Once it is resolved she will sign the nomination papers
Minister of Aviation Services, Reginald Cooray stated that he will not be contesting in this election since those who are capable of using force and those who can spend a lot of money can move ahead than the others under the preferential votes system. Leader of the Democratic Party, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka stated that the democratic party maintains its stance that it will contest the elections separately.
He added that they are forming of this alliance as one that is rising against the corrupt Mahinda Rajapaksa. Even though they are not in the alliance, they of the stance to chase away the corrupt Mahinda Rajapaksa from politics.

Snr. Vice President of the SLFP, W.D.J Seneviratne stated that persons who crossed over to the UNP are not capable of mounting pressure on the SLFP-led United People’s Freedom Alliance. Persons like Rajitha Senaratne, MKDS Gunawardena are those who continuously spoke against the Alliance.
He went on to note that the people know what politics they follow since they cannot mount pressure. It is true that they came with the President. But it is not they who brought about change. That it is a trend formed among the people casting aside any differences; that the people are dissatisfied over the actions of the United National Party
