The world’s oldest living person, the daughter of sharecroppers and granddaughter of slaves, celebrated her 116th birthday on Monday (July 6) in New York.

Susannah Mushatt Jones marked the occasion privately with family.

But on Tuesday (July 7), family, friends, neighbors and city leaders sang “Happy Birthday” to Jones during her public celebration.

Huge silver balloons illustrated her 116 years. And a large birthday cake was decorated with her favorite things; a pretty dress, bacon and chicken legs.

Jones is the third consecutive American to hold the title of world’s oldest person, according to the Guinness World Records.

Jones was born in Alabama in 1899 and after graduating from high school moved north in 1922 to New Jersey and then New York, where she worked as a housekeeper and childcare provider until 1965 when she retired.

Miss Susie, as she is known, now lives at the Vandalia Senior Center in the New York City borough of Brooklyn.

In addition to birthday cake and well wishes, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams proclaimed July 7, 2015 as “Miss Susie Day” and the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets presented Miss Susie her own jersey with the number 116.

Miss Susie never had children but has more than 100 nieces and nephews, many who were eager to praise her generosity.

Jones credits her longevity to never smoking or drinking.

Her family credits her upbeat personality.

The 116-year old lost her eyesight about 15 years ago. She has difficulty hearing and she is mostly bedridden, according to the home.

Jones inherited the title of world’s oldest living person after the June 17 death of Jeralean Talley, who was 116, in Michigan.

The world’s second oldest person is Emma Morano-Martinuzzi, a 115-year-old woman living in Italy, according to the Gerontology Research Group.

The group added that the oldest verified person was Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at 122 years and 164 days.
