An illegal moonshine brewery operating on a small islet in Maradankulama, Chilaw, was raided by the Walana Anti-Vice Squad on June 3. The raid was conducted  following an operation that lasted several days.

The Maradankulama Wewa is located about a kilkometre from the village of Bandarawaththa, which is about four kilometres away from Chilaw towards Colombo; and the Walana Anti-Vice Squad raided an illegal liquor brewery operating on a small islet in the centre of the lake.

Police had immediately arrested a suspect who had attempted to flee when they arrived, and they proceeded to conduct a thorough search of the premises. The officers who conducted the raid took steps to destroy the more-than-50 barrels discovered at this moonshine brewery.

Police investigations have revealed that the suspects had used onions, ammonia and even government-subsidised fertiliser to produce the moonshine. Police had also seized various equipment valued at more than Rs. 3 million.

The suspect in custody has been handed over to the Chilaw Police for further investigations.
