Actress Somalatha Subasinghe passes away

Veteran dramatist Somalatha Subasinghe, who made outstanding contributions to children’s and youth theater and gifted the children of Sri Lanka with many beautiful creations passed away on Saturday (May 30th) morning.

The funeral of the late dramatist will take place on Sunday (may 31st) evening at the Public Cemetery in Borella.

An actress and playwright Somalatha Subasinghe who entered the field in the sixties during the time of Professor Ediriweera Sarathchandra contributed to a number of renowned stage performances such as Moodhu Puththu, Nari Bana and Elowa Gihing Melowa Awa.

She also contributed in number of roles in some of Sri Lanka’s biggest movie productions including, Madol-Doowa ,Maha Gedara and Wiragama.

She founded Lanka Children’s and Youth Theatre Foundation and produced children plays including Thoppi Welendha, Hima Kumariya and Vikurthi.

The seasoned actress, playwright, directress and theater educationist Somalatha Subasinghe who had taken ill for over a period of time, was 79 years old at the time of her demise.
