President Maithripala Sirisena says those found guilty of the rape and murder of a schoolgirl in Pungudutivu, Jaffna, will be handed the maximum punishment through a special court.
The President made this statement during a visit to Jaffna on the morning of Tuesday May 26. President Maithripala Sirisena met with students from 17 schools in the district, at the Vembadi Girls School in Jaffna on Tuesday.
The students who participated at this meeting, brought issues and shortcomings at their schools, to the attention of the President.The president also met the parents of the murdered girl Sivaloganathan Vidya, at the residence of the Governor of the Northern Province, and expressed his condolences to them.
President Sirisena later participated in religious observances at the Naga Viharaya in Jaffna where he also called on the chief incumbent. A group including the Chief Minister of the Northern Province, C.V. Vigneswaran and Deputy Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran accompanied the President.
