Investigations into the rape and murder of a school girl in Pungudithivu, Jaffna have been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department.
Speaking to News1st the Police Media Spokesperson said that IGP N.K. Ilangakoon visited the Jaffna Peninsula to obtain more information on the incident.
ASP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that the CID officers have visited Kayts, as part of the investigation.
He added that they would like to inform the people of Kayts that the police is not vested with the powers to take punitive measures against a suspect, adding that the police can only investigate, gather evidence, apprehend and produce the suspect in court in its capacity.
ASP Gunasekara went on to say that the investigations into the matter are being carried out successfully.
