Police fire tear gas to disperse Pungudutivu gang-rape protesters

Police have fired tear gas to disperse protesters who were demonstrating against a gang rape and murder in Pungudutivu area in Jaffna.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that tear gas was fired at protesters who were opposite the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court. He added that a tense situation is prevailing in the area.

ASP Ruwan Gunasekara also stated that similar protests are taking place at number of locations in Jaffna and Kayts.

Meanwhile, the ninth suspect in the rape and murder was arrested in Wellawatte.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said that the suspect had fled to Colombo following the murder.

The other eight suspects who were arrested previously are in remand custody. The body of the seventeen-year-old school girl who was allegedly gang raped was found in the Punkuduthivu area last Wednesday.
