United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma says that it is the Chief Minister of the Province who has the power to dissolve the local government bodies and not the a Government Minister.
He made this statement speaking to reporters in Matara.
Dullas Alahapperuma noted that if the tenure of local government authorities have expired then steps should be taken to call for elections or extend the tenure of the authorities. The Parliamentarian noted that the system adopted by the current administration to appoint special commissioners is not favored by the masses.
He went on to say that according to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution the Central Government can only make decision on the composition and structure of the Local Government bodies.
The Former Minister called on the Chief Ministers of the 9 provinces to exercise their constitutional powers and not allow their powers to be used by a subject minister of the Government.
