The State of Economy as reflected in the Central Bank Annual Report 2014 was reviewed at a panel discussion held on Thursday (May 14th). A group including those in the banking sector as well as senior officials of the CBSL were present at the panel discussion.
Speaking at the occasion the Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran noted that there would be a growth in industries in time to come and the growth of consumption would spurn local entrepreneurs to produce more. He noted that demand would create supply response.
Meanwhile analysts question as to how the Governor of the CBSL continues to represent the Bank at public events in a backdrop where the findings of the three member committee that was appointed to look into the recent controversial bond issue is yet to be tabled in parliament.
Investigative business journalist Faraz Shauketaly speaking to News1st stated that instead of attending public events to promote the CBSL, Governor Mahendran should be making statements and answering questions from the Financial Crimes Investigation Division or the Bribery Commission. He noted that it is disgraceful that the Governor decided to return to work even when there is an ongoing investigation into his actions.
Shauketaly opines that CBSL Governor Arjuna Mahendran should be investigated immediately.
