Minister John Amaratunga says that Local Government bodies will be dissolved on the 15th of May.
UPFA MP Dallas Alahapperuma says that if the tenure of the Local Government Authorities are not extended, an election needs to be called for.
Even though the official term of local government bodies was scheduled to end in March, the term was extended by one and half months.
Thereby, the tenure of the Local Government bodies will end on the 15th of May.
Questions such as , Will the tenure of the Local Government Authorities be extended? Will an election be called for? or will the Local Government Authorities come under the purview of special commissioner? have been raised.
Minister of Public order John Amaratunga says that the President and the Prime Minister have decided to dissolve the Local Government Bodies on the 15th adding that they were to be dissolved in March. the minister also stated that Due to political reasons the tenure was extended by a month and a half.
Meanwhile UPFA MP Dullus Alahapperuma notes that if the tenure of the Local Government bodies are not extended, elections should be called for.
He adds that if they are trying to bring the local government bodies under a special commissioner of a secretary, that is purely fulfilling the requirements of the United National Party. He went onto say that there are 2300 members of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and 274 Local Government bodies are governed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. The United National Party thinks on their political gains.
Speaking further the Minister notes that they want to take away the power of the SLFP and UPFA on Local Government bodies adding that United National Party’s agenda is to do this in silence and head for the General Elections
