The Government Medical Officers Association says that there is shortage of medical specialists across the island.

Assistant Secretary of GMOA Nalinda Herath says, there is a deficiency not only in the government sector, but also in the private sector, adding that is why foreign doctors, are working in private hospitals in Colombo.

He went onto say that as a solution to this problem the GMOA has proposed to the Ministry of Health to send specialist doctors on 3 months of leave every year and to enroll them in the private sector in groups while not disrupting the functions of the government sector.

When News1st contacted the Ministry of Health regarding this, a ministry official stated that the shortage of medical specialists was due to the expansion of services.
