Youth admitted to Avissawella Hospital after alleged police assault

A young man who was a victim of an alleged assault by police is currently being treated at the Avissawella Base Hospital.

The alleged assault had occurred the day after the Vesak Poya day when two men claiming to be police officers took the youth away from a Dhansala he was at, citing that they need to inquire into a complaint.

Reports says that the parents of the young man’s girlfriend, had lodged a complaint with the police against him.

Speaking to the media, the victim’s brother said that the was verbally abused and thrown out when he tried to interfere and save his brother.

The victim’s girlfriend noted that she ran away and lived at her friend’s house as her parents were against the relationship. She added that she eloped with the victim once she turned 16.

She further noted that the two police officers who came in civil attire, took the victim away in a three-wheeler.

Our reporter says that the police refused to accept the complaint that had been made regarding the incident.
