An 35 year old Indian who allegedly tried to illegally smuggle more than 4.2 kilogrammes of gold from Sri Lanka has been arrested by the officers in the Katunayake Airport.

Director of Customs, Media Spokesperson Leslie Gamini noted that the value of the gold sums up to 21 million rupees.

The suspect was taken into custody when he was allegedly in the process of smuggling the gold to Chennai in India.

However, the goods were confiscated and a penalty of 40,000 rupees was imposed on the individual.
