Karapitiya man alleges that police robbed his money – police say complainant was a gambler

A complaint has been lodged at the Karapitiya Hospital police post citing that a police officer and several others believed to be ex-police officers had allegedly robbed Rs.900,000 from a businessman, aged 40, who is a resident of Meetiyagoda in Galle.

This individual, who was in the profession of lending money on interest, had been stopped by the police four days ago while returning home in the Aluthwala area in Mahagangoda.

The victim in question stated that several police officers grabbed him from behind and asked him where he was going and how much money he had on him. He had responded by saying that he had over Rs.900,000 in possession. According to the businessman, the police had then accused him of gambling, assaulted him, taken his money and once he fell unconscious taken him to a hospital.

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekera noted that the businessman was a suspect who was arrested for illegal gambling on April 9. He was released on bail on the following day under the orders of presenting in front of the Balapitiya Magistrate. Afterwards he had admitted himself into the Karapitiya hospital and had made the complaint. The police are currently conducting investigation into verifying these claims.
