Persons arrested in Gannoruwa party office clash released on bail (Watch video)

Twenty persons who were arrested in connection to a clash that broke out between two groups over a political party office in the Gannoruwa area in Peradeniya were granted bail on Monday (April 13).

Police Media Spokesperson ASP Ruwan Gunasekara speaking to News1st stated that the clash which broke out  on Sunday evening was between members of a political party and the owner of the building.

The owner of the building stated that the JVP had helped him to construct the building, adding that later the members of the Frontline Socialist Party had arrived and began to forcibly occupy the property. He went on to note that he had requested these persons to leave the premises but they did not comply. The owner went on to place on record that since he was being harassed by the members of the Frontline Socialist Party, he was forced to lodge a complaint with the Police.

However, Fontline Socialist party member  A.B.Gangoda noted that they had occupied the premises based on a 20 year lease agreement.

Reacting to this statement, the owner of the house stated that he had entered into a lease with a diffrent party and not with members of the Frontline Socialist party.

Reports emerged that a group of JVP members had come to the assistance of the building owner during the altercation which occurred on Sunday. When inquired Yatinuwara Pradeshiya Sabha member of the JVP, Ruwan Weerasinghe stated that the members of the JVP arrived at the location to cordially invite the members who were illegally occupying the party office constructed by them, to leave.

Four persons who suffered injuries during the clash were hospitalized on Sunday, three of them have been discharged at present. The 20 persons who were arrested in connection to the clash were released on bail, after they were produced before the Acting magistrate of Kandy.
