President Maithripala Sirisena says that a special committee will be appointed within a period of one month to inquire in to alleged human rights violations during the final stages of the civil conflict. The president made these comments to the BBC’s Sinhala service while on a visit to London.
President Sirisena had stated that he views the international backing for a domestic mechanism to look into the alleged human rights violations during the end of the conflict as a victory. He noted that during the previous administration there was no international consensus in this regard.
While stating that a committee to look into the Human rights violations would be established within a month, President Maithripala Sirisena noted that the tasks of this committee would be clealy defined in the future. The President reiterated that he does not think there will be a need for external persons to conduct investigations.
