The Committee appointed to look into proposed constitutional amendments stated that the draft bill on the 19th Amendment has been formulated and thereby will be tabled in Parliament expeditiously.
The committee met on Wednesday under the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Member of the Committee, Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath stated that discussions pertaining to the amendments to the constitution were completed by Wednesday (March 11). The parliamentarian added that the Elections Commissioner had pointed out the issues that have to be practically solved by Committee with regard to the implementation of electoral reforms.
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party says that the general election should be conducted in accordance with the new electoral system. Several other political parties have stated that the country should not rush into a new electoral system.
However the Working Committee of the United National Party on Wednesday (March 11) unanimously decided to go for a General Election on the 23rd of April.
