Leader of the JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that granting a monopoly for the Avant Garde and Rathna Lanka companies has caused many employees in the Maritime Security Service to lose their jobs.

The  firm Avant Garde, came under the spotlight after a ship which was docked at the Galle Harbour came under inspection on January 19, following a tip received by the Galle DIG.

Leader of JVP said that those who go to serve in our country’s Maritime Security Service have received many opportunities to serve in other agencies representing the country. But over the recent past, according to a circular issued by an Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, only the companies Rathna Lanka and Avant Garde  were granted those opportunities.

He added:

Nearly 500 to 600 jobs were left helpless , because of a recommendation which stated that if you are to be enrolled for foreign maritime security, you must go through Rathna Lanka or Avant Garde. Those who were dispatched by these two firms through this recommendation, were paid a salary of about Rs.127,000. But when they were serving through other representative institutions at those companies, they were paid a salary ranging from 1800 dollars to over 3000 to 4000 dollars. Those institutions receive the same salary even now. But only around 950 to 1000 dollars are paid to the maritime security service.

I have their salary slips. These two companies had created a procedure where the large amounts of dollars which was brought into the country after serving in foreign maritime security and pensions of soldiers were stolen,” he said.

Speaking further MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that a minister had intervened in the process of releasing the passport of the Chairman of Avant Garde after it was ordered by court that it be impounded.

Anura Kumara expressed these views:

The question I have is that why was the Chairman of Avant Garde so quick to response to the certain critical statement that I made regarding Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe. By this, the people can understand the connection between the two. Also I saw Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe asking whether if I am used to presenting criticism. It is with responsibility that I say, that information which were provided against the previous administration as well as facts that I am presenting about the current administration are legitimate and accurate. The passport of the Chairman of Avant  Garde was impounded and was released in a week. This issue was brought up during a high profile discussion. It was the highest official in the Attorney General’s Department that said that there were certain influences from former ,inister Thilak Marapana and Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe. If they have a problem regarding this matter, it shouldn’t be inquired from me. We will not take notice of any of this chitter chatter. Because we have a responsibility.
