A protest was held demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister of the North Western Province, Dayasiri Jayasekara prior to the first sitting of the Council on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, another group staged a demonstration in support of Dayasiri Jayasekara at the same location.
A tense situation arose between the two groups of demonstrators. A demonstration was held opposite the North western Provincial Council demanding that Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara step down from his post.
The demonstration was organised by a group including the Leader of the Opposition of the Provincial Council J.C. Alawathuwala.
They also demanded that the chief minister not be included in the new government.
The group of demonstrators first carried out their protest opposite the Kurunegela District Secretariat.
Later, another group held a procession in support of Chief Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara. A tense situation arose when the two groups met.
Our correspondent noted that the situation was brought under control with the intervention of the police.
