The Central Committee and the Executive Committee of the SLFP gathered on Thursday and approved the decision taken by Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to hand over the SLFP leadership to President Maithripala Sirisena.

According to parliamentarian A.H.M Fowzie, the Central Committee first approved the transfer of power and it was also unanimously approved by the Executive Committee of the party.

Meanwhile, during the Executive Committee meeting Former Presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa were named as patrons of the SLFP.

Former leader of the House, Nimal Siripala de Silva was appointed as the Opposition Leader while W.D.J. Seneviratne was named as the Chief Opposition Whip
