“Unprecedented fog” in Abu Dhabi caused several nightmarish delays for plane passengers, according to Etihad Airways.
Etihad Flight 183 from Abu Dhabi to San Francisco was held on the tarmac for 12 hours on Saturday, turning a 16-hour flight into 28 hours of misery. And Flight 23 to Dusseldorf, Germany, was delayed for 13 hours because of the same fog.
After that plane finally took off, a 73-year-old passenger died on the flight, at which point the plane was diverted to Vienna, an spokesman confirmed
“A medical team met the aircraft upon landing to assist the passenger on-board. However, he
was pronounced deceased,” the spokesman said. “We offer our deepest condolences to his family.” ”
The cause of death was not released, however the airline said the tarmac delay was not a factor in his passing.
“During the time on the ground, awaiting permission to take-off, Etihad Airways provided passengers with refreshments and information about the reasons for the delay,” the airline said in a statement.
The airline apologized for the delays, but said that there was nothing it could do about the fog.
“No one was angry about the delay itself. If it’s unsafe to fly, we don’t want to fly,” a passenger said.
