Tensions broke out in Kaduruwela, Polonnaruwa on Tuesday evening.
Police said that tensions broke out between a group of monks engaged in election campaigning and another group. The Collective of Bhikku Organisations organised a walk to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa, in close proximity to the Pulasthi Budhdhi Mandapa in Polonnaruwa.
They arrived at the Kaduruwela town while distributing leaflets among the public. While representatives of the Collective of Bhikkhu Organisations reached the Kaduruwela town, another group including monks supporting Presidential Candidate Maithripala Sirisena also arrived at the location.
The Police Media Spokesperson said that the police had to intervene to restore calm. He added that investigations have been launched and that video evidence too is being examined.
