A group engaged in a protest march on Thursday requesting that the land of the Dharmayathanaya in Rajagiriya, where the Chairman of the JHU, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero resides, be provided to them.
The group of persons engaged in this protest march requesting the right to the lands of the Sadahamsevana International Buddhist Information Institute in Rajagiriya which is also where the Chairman of the JHU, Venerable Athuraliye Rathano Thero resides.
Although the march was scheduled to make its way to the Institute, the group diverted their route to the Kotte Urban Council. They informed the Mayor of Kotte of their issue.
Mayor of Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Janaka Ranawaka expressed these views;
Currently it serves as a guest house. The people have been made uneasy over the provision of lodging to people at a place which is used for political gains. They arrived at the Urban Council to hand over a letter. I expect that a just solution will be given after discussions with senior state officers and the President.
The group expressed their satisfaction over the promise made by the Mayor.
Security was tightened at the Sadahamsevana International Buddhist Information Institute with news of the group attempting to make their way to the location.
Chairman of JHU, Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero expressed the following views:
I received word that a protest exerting pressure on the Mayor Janaka Ranawaka, had taken place. I received word that it was the workers at the council who had protested. This Sadahamsevana International Buddhist Information Institute was established seven years ago. This land belongs to the Temple. This is not my personal land. There is a deed which bears testament that this was presented to the Maha Sangha. The entire country knows that they are attempting to harm me under the guise of harming this place.
