UPFA, General Secretary, Minister Susil Premajayantha said;
As the UPFA, we are preparing for an upcoming presidential election. But we cannot mention an exact date. However, a time period could be mentioned. Once the President announces a date, the nominations list and the locations to submit the lists must be finalised within a time period no less than 16 days and no more than a month. The election date will be announced within a time period no less than a month and no more than two months or sixty days from the day nominations are called.
Meanwhile, speaking at a media briefing on Wedneday Senior Minister of Rural Affairs, Athauda Seneviratne explained the objective of a snap election.
As far as I know this snap election is being called to give the impression that the people of this country rejects the attempts made by certain forces to destroy the integrity of this country by taking the soldiers, the relevant officials and politicians of the country who issued certain orders, to the EU court to be punished. There isn’t any other reason for an election to be called. It is mainly to defeat foreign conspiracies. We are going into a snap election to showcase the people’s opinion of the country.
