Election monitoring organisation, People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections or PAFFREL, notes that the holding of staggered elections is a distortion of democracy.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo on Wednesday, PAFFREL’s Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi, elaborated:
Primarily, PAFFREL wishes to take exception with the holding of staggered elections in this country. We see the holding of staggered elections in this way, as a distortion of democracy in the country. Elections have been staggered in a manner which is beneficial to the incumbent political party which has been in power for some time. The goal here is to consolidate their power. The serious problem with these staggered elections is that they pose an obstacle to the true public opinion coming out.
