News1st received information that permission has been granted to build a Hydropower plant using the second highest waterfall of Sri Lanka, the Kurundu Oya falls.
It is reported that due to the construction of this Hydropower plant, heavy damages have not only been inflicted on the beautiful falls, but also to the surrounding environment and its fauna.
Although several institutions including the Ceylon Electricity Board have granted approval for this project, Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat, D.P.G Kumarasiri told News1st that he has not been informed of this move.
D.P.G. Kumarasiri said he has no power to oppose the project after approval from such institutions have been granted.However, the Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat charged that environmental, cultural and archaeological damages occur by the approvals given from inside office rooms in Colombo.
