The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment has requested that the public refrain from seeking employment abroad by obtaining tourist visas.

The bureau points out that those who do so will have to face issues while serving abroad.

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment points out that there is a racket to illegally directs Sri Lankans to engage in foreign employment on tourist visas.

Deputy General Manager of SLBF Mangala Randeniya expressed the following views:
We have uncovered certain malpractices that had taken place over the recent past. The most serious one was one was sending individuals to Dubai on tourist visa an then smuggling them to other countries.  This is human trafficking; it is a crime. Individuals who sought employment in Dubai and Malaysia on tourist visas are facing numerous difficulties. They have been subjected to extortion and sexual harassment. Their labor has been abused. Therefore, the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment requests the public not to depart the island for foreign employment with tourist visas.  Do not fall victim to this practice. If you are to work abroad, you need to enter an agreement and obtain a work permit.
