Water crisis hits several districts across Sri Lanka

The Irrigation Department notes that many parts of the country are facing a water crisis due to the lack of rain in a number of districts.

News 1st correspondents looked into the matter at district level and were able to uncover the stories of many communities who face difficulties due to the lack of water.

According to the water management unit of the Irrigation Department, a number of districts including Ampara, Monaragala and Hambantota are facing the brunt of the dry weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Meteorology Department predicts that rainy weather conditions will be experienced in the southeastern parts of the country in the coming days.

Deputy Director Athula Karunaratne said that strong winds could also be expected along the western banks of the central hills.

Rainy weather conditions experienced in Hatton since Wednesday night have hampered day-to-day activities of the public.

The weather conditions also caused the collapse of a tree on to the Hatton – Nuwara Eliya main road in the Kotagala area.

Meanwhile, a gale force wind that blew through the Pallemulle area in Panadura damaged eight houses.

A special team has been deployed to look into the damages caused  by this strong gust of wind.
