Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe visited Aluthgama and Beruwela on Sunday to inquire about the recent unrest that broke out in the respective areas.
The opposition leader participated in religious observances at the Aluthgama Kande Viharaya before visiting the affected areas.
The UNP party leader, who later visited the Mosque located in Dharga Town, held discussions with area residents.
He also held discussions with the Cheif Prelate of the Shailabimbarama Viharaya in Kurundhuwatte, Beruwela prior to visiting the Sapugoda Shri Maha Viharaya located the Beruwela Temple Road.
“What was the purpose of a group of outsiders arriving at this location?” he asked. “There is a mechanism of solving problems when there are different ethnicities reside at a particular location. Why wasn’t that procedure followed? A need has arisen to create religious harmony.”
He added: “The Muslim community should live without fear. The Muslim community has therefore proposed that a common consensus should be reached following discussions. I believe that this needs to progress over time.”
