A magnificent century by Kumar Sangakkara steadied Sri Lanka as they continued their first innings on day three of the 1st test against hosts England.

The game which is being worked off at the Lord’s Cricket Ground saw England post a first innings score of 575 runs.

Overnight batsman Kaushal Silva was the first Sri Lankan wicket to fall on Saturday as he was undone for 63 runs.

Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene then teamed up to put on a 126 run stand for the 3rd wicket.

Mahela Jayawardene recorded his 47 test half century on Saturday.

Kumar Sangakkara went on to score his 36th century in the longer version of the game, this is incidentally his first century at the Lords Cricket Ground. Their partnership ended when Jayawardene was trapped in front by Stuart Broad for 55 runs.

Lahiru Thirimane’s stay at the crease was brief as he became James Anderson’s second wicket of the day.
