A fire broke out on a multi-day fishing trawler which was anchored at the Kudawella Fisheries Harbour in Tangalle on Monday afternoon.
The police say that another five vessels located adjacent to the trawler were also destroyed in the fire.
The fire had broken out on the trawler at about 2 p.m. Monday at the Kudawella Fisheries Harbour in Tangalle.
The fire had spread when fishermen attempted to take the vessel out of the harbour in order to put out the fire.
The police say that the flames were eventually doused by residents together with the navy.
While three vessels were completely gutted by the fire, another two vessels were damaged. No casualties were reported, and the damage is yet to be estimated.
The cause of the fire has not been determined and the Tangalle Police are conducting further investigations.
