Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya convening a media briefing today commented on future elections.

He expressed views:

The Uva Provincial Council election will be held first.. If the provincial council is dissolved by the second of September, I am vested with the power to hold the elections by the third Saturday in the month of November.

We are aware that possibility of holding an election in November is low because the budget will be presented during this period. Next year, it will be made mandatory to call for elections for all the local government institutions in the country.

Accordingly, a presidential election and a general election needs to take place in 2016. However, according to the constitution,  the President can dissolve Parliament at any moment and go in for an election. The President can also call for a presidential election after November this year with or without any legal advise.  We cannot comment on the dates right now …”
