Sword-wielding Katana mob allegedly attacks police officers

The clash broke out in the Demanhandiya area in Katana on Sunday evening.

A group of police officers who attempted to intervene to diffuse the situation also came under attack from one of the groups involved in the clash. According to the Police Media Spokesperson, two individuals suffered injuries when the police officers opened fire.

The police went to the area after receiving information that a group was attacking a house in the Demanhandiya area. It is reported that around 30 armed men were involved in the incident.

A relative elaborated: “They came in bikes, stopped in-front of my brother’s house and began attacking the house with swords. As I was running away, I saw through the window of my brother’s room that he was being attacked”.

“Two police officers came here. After sometime the assailants returned carrying swords. The police then shot at them, ” she said.

The police also notes that three individuals who suffered injuries in the clash are receiving treatment at the Negombo Base Hospital. Three suspects arrested in connection with the incident were place in remand custody till June 2, after being produced before court.

The two suspects who suffered gunshot wounds are receiving treatment at the Negombo Base Hospital under the watchful eyes of prison officials.
