The Ministry of Health states that the number of disabled persons in Sri Lanka will increase upto 24.2% by the year 2040.

The Ministry noted the main reasons for this rise in statistics as the increase in road accidents and the aged population in the country. During a survey conducted last year the total of disabled persons in Sri Lanka was at 10%.

The Ministry pointed out that since a  special system is required to give protection and assistance to people with disabilities, the  Rehabilitaion and Rheumatalogy Hospital  at Ragama will be further developed.

Accordingly, the Ministry added that several prosthetic manufacturing institutions were established in Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Galle and Badulla.
