The main suspect arrested in connection to the murder of senior journalist Mel Gunasekara has been identified as the mason who had earlier worked in her house, according to the police

The main suspect, who was arrested by the police on Sunday evening, is reported to be the mason who had come to paint the journalist’s house two months ago.

Senior Freelance Journalist Mel Gunasekera was found murdered in her home in Sugathipura, Battaramulla early Sunday morning.

Her missing cell phone was found in the suspect’s possession.

The police said the suspect, who is a 39-year old Dompe resident, had entered Gunasekera’s house early Sunday morning with the intention of robbing the house, suspecting that the whole family would have gone out to church as usual.

Later on finding that Mel Gunasekara had been in the house at the time, he had assaulted and killed her and fled with her cell phone, the police said.

The suspect was arrested following investigations carried out by the Mirihana Special Crimes Division.
