Nominations were accepted for the upcoming Western and Southern Provincial Council Polls on Monday as well.

The deadline for submitting nominations is February 6.  The Jana Setha Peramuna or People’s Welfare Front handed in their nominations for the Hambantota District on Monday.  One independent group deposited their bond.

The Jana Setha Peramuna also submitted their nominations for the Matara District. Meanwhile,  nominees of the Democratic Party, signed their nomination papers at the Party Headquarters on Monday.

Democratic Party Chief Organiser for the Kolonnawa Electorate, Susil Kindelpitiya too, signed his nomination papers, at this occasion.

Speaking to media Susil Kindelpitiya said: “I signed the nomination papers at the auspicious time today. I say that we have assigned a strong team for the Colombo District. Our victory is assured. Groups opposed to us are engaged in slinging mud against our leader. I do not think that the people of our country and the people of the Colombo District will falter as a result. We expect that they will give the appropriate response at the Provincial Council Election”

The Elections Secretariat notes that the deadline for depositing bonds for independent groups contesting the elections, is noon February 5. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission says that it has commenced accepting complaints pertaining to the upcoming provincial council polls.

Commissioner Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa said that two special units have been established in Colombo and Matara for this purpose.  He added that complaints can be lodged over the phone by dialing 1-9-9-6.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission also expects to engage in monitoring activity on election day.
