The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna has succeeded in vesting the responsibilities and power of the position of Leader in its next successor. However, the situation in the United National Party, a key political party in this country, is still the complete opposite.

There is still no change in the Leadership of the UNP which has faced twenty three election defeats.

At every instance that they were defeated at elections, party supporters have called on the Party Leadership to step down and hand over the responsibility to a populist Leader who has a voter base.

The fact that several senior members of the UNP with significant voter bases, crossed over to the government, is sufficient proof that this did not happen.  While the UNP’s voter base declines on a daily basis and supporters abandon the party, Ranil Wickremesinghe, still holds the party leadership.
