The Department of Wildife says that a special programme will be implemented to conserve animals under threat. The department said that the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home will be used as a pilot project in this regard.
The first phase of the programme will focus on conserving species of leopard that are on the verge of extinction.
The aim of this programme is to breed such animals and release them into the wild.
A senior officer in the Wildlife Department said the three leopards belonging to the threatened species that are currently under the care of the department will be used for this purpose.
